I grew up in West Virginia playing basketball and chess. Sadly, I was better at the latter, especially after torn cartilage surgery in 8th grade. I started covering basketball in Tokyo when a group of 44 U.S. college seniors came for a pre-draft tournament hoping to attract a scout’s eye. A few months later, I started writing for Hoop and Gekkan Basketball, two Japanese magazines that I write for to this day. I teach English composition and ESL at Cal State – Los Angeles and Pasadena City College.
